Beginners Guide to DIY Castile

 What is Castile Soap?

Castile soap is a natural, non-toxic, vegetable based soap. Its multi-purpose properties make it a well known ingredient in the natural, DIY product world. I’ve had a bit of a love-hate relationship with Castile soap. Before I get into some of its uses, it’s important to point out that it will take you some time to find what works for you.

Many regular soaps are filled with harmful, synthetic, cheap filler ingredients which create big, foamy bubbles. We associate these bubbles with being clean.

Castile soap is NOT your regular liquid soap, it is a much thinner consistency. It has minimal lather and smells different to what we are used to (there is little scent). There are so many different recipes online which can be confusing. Diluted. Undiluted. Use with speciality ingredients that claim to improve lather… You will read them all. But regardless of which recipes you choose, I promise you the single thing that will improve your experience with Castile soap is a foaming dispenser. A foaming dispenser does the hard work for you. Your solutions will otherwise be thin, spray from regular dispensers (which can be messy) and your soap will be more difficult to lather. I’m also not a fan of using the product undiluted as aside from being expensive, it can be drying.

Here are some of its uses:

  • Dish liquid
  • Window cleaning
  • General cleaning (for use in multi purpose sprays)
  • Floor cleaner
  • Toilet cleaner
  • Cleaning fruit and vegetables
  • Cleaning makeup brushes
  • Pet shampoo
  • Laundry detergent
  • Hand, body and face wash
  • Shaving cream
  • Shampoo
  • Makeup remover
  • Mouth wash

I know what you’re thinking – It does all of these things? Why am I only finding out about this now?! I felt the same way and immediately added to cart.

How I use Castile soap in my home

I have tried and tested Castile soap in many areas of the home but these are the uses that have stuck. I did not enjoy Castile soap for washing dishes or in the laundry as an example, I did not find it stringent enough but I know of others that swear by it – Have fun with it and find what works for you.  My ratio is generally 1 part soap to 3 parts water.

Hand Wash / Body Wash

Ingredients
1/4 cup Castile soap
3/4 cup cooled boiled water
1 tbsp fractionated coconut oil
15 drops essential oils

Method: Combine ingredients in a foaming dispenser and shake. The fractionated coconut oil adds an element of moisture (but is not essential). Pure essential oils add antibacterial properties and aid in cleansing your skin. Think a fresh lemon or tea tree in your hand wash and a revitalising peppermint or relaxing lavender in your body wash.

Use: Body wash, hand wash and doubles as a shaving cream!

All Purpose Cleaner

Ingredients
2 tbsp unscented liquid Castile soap
1 cup cooled boiled water
10 drops essential oils
Spray bottle (preferably dark and glass to prolong life of the product)

Method: Pour ingredients directly into a spray bottle and shake gently.

Use: I like using this spray for my kitchen counters, any hard surfaces, the toilet, vanity and bath tub. I use a damp microfibre cloth to wipe down. The product does not need to be rinsed and leaves surfaces sparkling. Read more about my 3 ingredient DIY natural multipurpose spray here.
